Map of Aspen Recess Location
A jam-packed weekend of Alt-Blues, Blues, and Fusion dancing, camping, hiking, and dancing in some of the most beautiful and rugged mountains in the country. ABR was the first of a unique series of national alt-blues/fusion exchanges that focus on building dancer community and solidarity, love for the outdoors, and unrestrained self-expression through dance and music. Aspen Recess is unique because the event itself is your host, with every dancer living, exploring, and dancing together in the same place all weekend.
Again, this year we are tailoring ABR to be more like the west coast Recesses. It means you will have the option to eat communal meals with the event if you decide to buy into the Recess Food Coop ($35 veggie meal plan, with an option of adding a $20 meat share). Additionally, this year everyone who registers will sign up for a couple hour "plug-in" shift to help make the event happen. A typical plug-in shift might be spent helping in the kitchen to cook for your fellow Recessors or building sweet art installations to dance in all night. You will sign up for your Plug-In shift when you arrive at the event.

Plugging Into The Recess
Recess events are not run by some huge production company; they are run and produced by you! Every single person who registers will work one volunteer shift during the event. You will get to choose where you plug in: working in the kitchen, building one of our structures, helping folks register and find their way around, creating a enchanted ambiance for the dances, supporting all our hard-working volunteers…whatever you decide, you’ll be helping to make the Recess magic happen.
The Recesses have had required volunteering for years, and many participants tell us that their volunteer shift was a highlight of their experience. You’ll get to hang out with people you may never have otherwise met, and most importantly you'll have an opportunity to spend time in genuine service to your community. This event and this community belong to you!
When you arrive at the event you will have a chance to pick how you want to plug-in and who you want to work with.

Recess Survival Guide: What You Should Know
This is a mostly off-the-grid event: please don't expect to be able to charge your cell phone or your air mattress pump. We will have shower with hot water, flush toilets, as well as porta-johns. However, to make sure you are fully prepared, make sure you bring all of the following:
- Build will begin Thursday morning, official arrival is at 4pm on Thursday. Feel free to arrive before the 4pm start time, but plan to help us set up!
- Everything you need for camping We are talking ground pad, sleeping bag, tent, the works.
- Sun screen, bug spray, and clothes to be in the sun for much of the day. Temperatures at night will probably be in the 50s with daytime highs in the low 80s, and could be pretty chilly at night.
- Snacks. If you buy meal shares we will feed you three meals a day plus snacks, (with vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, and meat options). If, however, you have other crazy allergies or dietary restrictions, it's probably a good idea to bring some of your own food regardless of whether you buy meal shares.
- NEW Your own MUG. We've invested in dishware and have collected silverware over the years. Unless you prefer to eat from your own dishware, don't worry about bringing it! Do however bring your own mug for yummy warm coffee or tea in the morning. We recommend putting your name and city on whatever you bring and don´t bring your grandmother´s china or anything else you'd be devastated to lose.
- Item(s) of clothing to be screenprinted + $10 donation for the artist. We will be offering custom-prints on any clothes you choose to bring—suggested donation $10. Clothing must be dropped off for screen printing on Friday and/or Saturday morning and will be available for pick-up Sunday afternoon. The inks will be black and white, so bring clothes that will show those colors well. Also keep in mind that textured fabric and seams are hard to print on and often produce less-than-ideal outcomes.
Tentative Event Schedule: All Heavy On the "Ish"

What is the Recess food Co-op?
As always, collective meals and snacks will be available all day every day. Everyone who wants to eat with us can buy a food share and our kitchen team will pool all the cooperative food funds and volunteer labor to provide totally awesome meals made with the most fresh, local and organic food possible.
Vegan and gluten-free options will be available at every meal.
One food share ($25/event for Aspen) entitles you to 3 days of vegetarian food, which includes 3 meals a day.
The first official meal of the event will be Friday dinner, and the last Monday Brunch.
In addition to your veggie share, you can buy a meat share. Because meat is extremely resource intensive not just to produce, but to buy, refrigerate off grid, and prepare safely, there will be an additional cost for meat shares. One meat share ($15/event for Aspen) will entitle you to meat meals, including one 3 - 4 oz. servings of meat each day. If you think you want twice that amount, feel free to purchase multiple meat shares.
