Angel and Recess Supporting Black Lives
While all dance events have been closed in 2020, Angel and the Recess Bus has been active in supporting Black Lives Matter, APTP (Anti Police Terror Project) Sacramento, and many other organizations throughout northern California throughout 2020 and the beginning of 2021.
We fought the Federal Tax Audit, and we won!! Mostly!
May 3rd, 2020 Tax Audit Update! It has been a 3 year battle and an emotional ordeal of providing documentation for the over half-a-million dollars’ worth of Recess Production's expenses for the tax years of 2014, 2015, and 2016. We have hunted down and showed itemized receipts for every class hired to every breakfast taco served and just this week the IRS Appeals Court tax attorney sent us a settlement accepting 98% of our receipt expenses in question!!! We are dancing so hard to this news!!
The real-number total is $11,054 in Federal tax liability between the three years (and counting as it moves to State taxes), of which over half was the IRS refusing to acknowledge that Angel was a work vehicle and a legitimate tax deduction. Who would paint a personal vehicle like that! So absurd, but it is the IRS after all. However, for us, it is still a giant win, and lowered from the $189,000 of taxes they originally were demanding from us. That said, it is still a lot of money for a production team that is currently taking a break from hosting events. Inside the Dance is a film by Ian Burke and Claire Loussouarn. It began as an idea to document the global blues and fusion partner dance culture but evolved into a 3-month journey through the American Blues Recess festivals in 2014.
It became a breakup journey for the filmmakers, who were at this time juggling making a film about flow, connection, and intimacy while going through the emotional challenges of a relationship separation - and dancing through it.
‘Inside the Dance’ immerses you in the transience and intimacy of both the dance connection and the community that builds around it. The journey is at times euphoric and at times melancholic, as gatherings, connections and dances are forged and let go of. The film flows through free-spirited adventures and ecstatic dance floor highs to the cathartic release of the temple burning ritual at Burning Man.
