Recess Sexual Assault Response Protocol
Intent: This document does not intend to determine specific actions or be a replacement for good relationships and value-based decisions. Some of those values can be seen on our document Values Governing Recess Accountability Processes Document. The hope is that this Response Protocol Document provides a list of options available for a process, stated and agreed-upon base values, and optimal outcomes in dealing with issues of sexual assault and accountability surrounding Recess. Recess will take full responsibility for initiating and administering Accountability Processes surrounding Recess Events. Recess will not be responsible for processes pertaining to off-Recess-site spaces or communities. Recess Organizers may be involved in any outside processes as individuals as they like, just with clear distinctions that it is not a Recess Process.
Protocol Regarding Having People Who Have Caused Hurt At Recess
When made aware of a Person Who Has Caused Hurt (PWHCH) attending Recess, Recess will determine which of the following actions are appropriate for the circumstance. These are considerations and lines-of process to help as a guide.
Consideration 1: will it be possible for us to hold this person accountable to our Braver Spaces Agreement in our space? If "No," they are barred from attending and given whatever support of "Accountability" we feel available to give as outlined in Recess Process Support Document For People Who Have Caused Hurt. If "yes," and there are no other reasons for disallowing them to attend, we begin the following process.
Step 1: Contact The Person Who Was Hurt (PWWH):
a. See if they plan to attend the event in question. If so, begin a process of determining if them and their transgressor will be able to comfortably share space at Recess. We offer all available options in our Recess On-Site Accountability Support Document, as well as explore other creative options that feel good to them and us.
b. If we are unable to create circumstances where they feel comfortable sharing space with the person who has hurt them, we will give the PHWH priority in the space. This is with stated ideal outcome being that them and the PWHCH are able to share space in the undetermined future.
c. Offer and/or begin solutions and actions from Recess Process Support Document For People Who Have Caused Hurt and the Recess Support For People Who Have Been Hurt Document to start building and moving towards an ideal outcome where they are able to share space.
Step 2: Contact the person (email, phone, in-person) letting the PWHCH know that there have been concerns regarding them upholding our Braver Spaces Agreements at Recess, be specific about the theme and type of concern. Offer no specifics regarding the person who was hurt or specific circumstances. Ask them to check-in with us when they arrive at the event.
a. Decide which of (if any) of our Recess On-Site Accountability Support Document to enact for the duration of the event.
b. Determine a sub-committee of Recess Organizers and community members to carry out the selected options from the Recess On-Site Accountability Support Document.
Step 3: Do any follow up necessary after the event. The goals of our follow-up are as follows:
a. To create documents to share with other organizers and community members regarding our process and opinions about their risk in community spaces.
b. To aid the individuals involved in their continued healing and rehabilitation, ideally passing it onto a locally-led process where necessary.
c. To take lessons for ourselves to improve our own process around these issues.
