The Recess Braver Spaces Agreement

I ______________________ am responsible for my own actions. I am aware that almost all of my actions have an effect on others, despite what my intentions may be, and expect all Recess participants to maintain a similar awareness. To uphold these values, I agree to the following:

  • I agree to do my best to treat all Recess participants with respect and consideration, including their opinions, beliefs, experiences and differing points of view and revise my behavior when I’m made aware that I am not doing so.
  • I agree to explicitly negotiate and/or abide by prior negotiation of actions that affect another person, including asking for consent before touching them. 
  • I agree to acknowledge and respect the boundaries of others as they are communicated.
  • I agree, to the best of my ability, to represent my boundaries and desires as accurately as possible and to inform the people I interact with as they change.
  • I agree to do my best to treat all Recess participants equally without regard to real or perceived race, class, sex, gender, sexuality, physical or mental ability, appearance, social standing, etc.
  • If I experience or witness any behavior that crosses my boundaries or makes me or others feel uncomfortable, I agree to take steps to amend the situation, including addressing it myself or talking to a member of the Recess Organizing Team. 
  • I agree to participate in a conflict mediation and/or accountability process with a Recess appointed mediator in the event that my actions result in others feeling unsafe.
  • I agree to engage in the content presented at the Recess to the best of my capacity, especially when that content feels uncomfortable or pushes my understanding of the issues presented. 
  • I agree to hold in confidence stories shared with me and processes that I participate in here. What is said here stays here, what is learned here leaves here.
  • I agree to be compassionate toward myself and to do my best to utilize the resources available to me for self-care, emotional processing and support.
